Auditions FAQ
Do I need to have anything prepared before my audition?
We ask those auditioning to prepare a verse and chorus from a song of their choice. Aside from that, come ready to sing a few scales and match pitch!
What’s the callback process like?
Depending on the results of open auditions, you may be invited back to one of several callback rounds. You will typically receive callback invitations via email. We may ask you to prepare a specific song or learn one of our arrangements. The callback process usually lasts no more than a week following open auditions.
How many new members do you take per year?
There’s no exact number of singers we’re looking for in an audition round. In recent years, we’ve generally taken 4-6 new members, but we don’t have a predetermined number of spots open at any given time.
What distinguishes Counterparts from other groups on campus?
As Penn’s oldest co-ed a cappella group, we’ve been around since 1981. Since our founding, we’ve stayed true to our roots of pop and jazz while also consistently embracing new styles and performance methods. Our distinct two act shows allow us to demonstrate musical versatility and weave classical and modern styles together. In addition, we have an incredibly strong alumni network all over the world. Because of this, we’re able to tour across the globe, gain access to spectacular performance venues, and most importantly, have an ever-expanding family. So, if you’re looking to sing with a talented group of people, tour the world, perform in amazing venues like Carnegie Hall, join an incredible alumni network (which just happens to include John Legend), and become a part of a family, then you should without a doubt audition for Counterparts.
I have another specific question that isn’t listed here.
Feel free to shoot us an email at penncounterparts@gmail.com or submit one of our online forms and one of our board members would be more than happy to answer any other questions you may have about the audition process or the group.
